Today’s teens and young adults may be smart, tech-savvy, and academically accomplished, but employers are sounding the alarm: they’re entering the workforce missing the one thing that matters most—soft skills. According to Forbes, 82% of managers say Gen Z new hires need extra training in critical areas like communication, time management, collaboration, and professionalism. Some employers are even avoiding hiring recent grads altogether, citing a lack of workplace readiness. In fact, nearly 3 in 4 managers say Gen Z is the most challenging generation to work with, not because they’re incapable, but because they haven’t been taught how to lead, speak up, or handle real-world pressure.
The reality is, these “soft” skills like emotional intelligence, adaptability, problem-solving, and leadership are now the top deciding factors for hiring, promotion, and long-term success. As automation and AI grow, human-centered skills are the new currency. Yet, thanks to remote learning, screen-heavy communication, and a lack of structured life skills education, many Gen Zers haven’t had the chance to build these muscles. Employers expect them.
